contemplating...

This is a shelf that is over the sink in the kitchen...pardon the dust, I'd usually rather stitch than do housework...

It's been there since we moved in 12 years ago and I've left it "natural" as the cabinets are dark wood (really crappy wood, but that's a whole nuther story).

So anyhoo, am thinking about painting it white, white-ish, or some other color...but can't decide...

Also thinking about getting rid of a whole bunch of my Mary E. stuff because I'm just tired of all the dusting (or feeling guilty over not doing it)! So maybe we'll just take this down altogether and put up one of those old fashioned dish racks....those are so cool!

Any thoughts?

Well, if you paint it white, it isn't going to show up much on that wall so I would go for a color. If you aren't overly attached to the ME stuff I would go for the dish rack! I love those things and haven't found a place to put one - yet.:)

White, Black or Red. Not bright Red but Barn Red. (If Black, sand on the edges after you paint it to get a little wood to show through. Looks cool that way.)
But don't get rid of your Mary stuff. You will REGRET it!!!!! I have sold a lot of Mary stuff over the years and wish I had kept every bit of it.

XOXO

I recently read a trick about rubbing a candle on the wood that you want to show through, and then paint a color on top so that it looks rustic/countryish. I agree with Jackie, if you go for something else, I'd keep the ME stuff because you'll probably regret it later on. I do like the shelf... but those dish racks are pretty cool!

Hmmmm...On a whitish wall I would use a little color. Black, Reddish, Sage, etc. The dish rack sounds kind of fun.

LOVE all your Shepherd's bush stitching. Their stuff is so fun to stitch!

I like both ideas Andrea - sorry not much help! I would paint the shelf a color if you decide to keep it. Do you have a favorite color, or maybe if you keep the Mary E goodies on it pick a color that would compliment them. It's fun to revamp, and that gives your rooms a whole new feel! I've been doing it too.

I agree with Jackie....don't get rid of the ME. I think painting the shelf will give it a whole new look.
Love all your stitchery and the pugs.

Red or yellow paint....or both. Those are Mary E. colors! But don't get rid of the Mary E. stuff!

I was going to say keep your ME stuff but looks like everyone else has beat me to it! What about yellow for the shelf?

Pack rat that I am, I say if you're tired of the ME stuff pack it up but don't get rid of it. You oughta see all the boxes of "stuff" I have in the basement! Sheesh! I've found that the older I get the less stuff I want to have to dust. Let us know what you end up doing.

I love white woodwork/cabinetry, but you'd really have to paint the wall a bright or deep color for it to pop (proabably a whole lot more work that you'd care to do!). I agree with a previous commenter: barn red would be fabulous! (On the wall or on the shelf unit :)

Oh my gosh Andrea, I have that same recipe box (middle row right) and birdhouse(middle row left) on the shelf above my kitchen sink! Tuesday Morning I'm thinking is where those came from? LOL
